Stop and Smell the Roses

Ever wonder what flowers and a great night’s sleep have in common? They both make us happy!

Famous botanist and horticulturist Luther Burbank once said, “Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food, and medicine for the soul.” People have been giving flowers for hundreds of years to make people feel better when they are sick, show their appreciation and love, or simply to make others smile. Flowers make us feel instantly happier and put a smile on our face, similar to how we feel after a great night’s sleep.

What is it about flowers that make us so happy?

Color - A famous study conducted by researchers at Rutgers University found that flowers have both an immediate and long-term effect on mood - one of the biggest reasons due to the colors in flowers. Pinks, peaches, and warm colors tend to provide a feeling of nurturing and are great for people who are sick or grieving, while reds and oranges are known to be colors of passion. Blues and purples promote relaxation and tranquility, while bright, contrasting colors signal celebration.

Scent - A chemical in roses that gives them their famous scent has been shown to elicit feelings of happiness and being in love. Other flowers such as gardenias, lilies, hyacinths, and lily of the valley offer other aromatherapeutic benefits as well. Specifically, lavender has relaxing qualities that can make it easier to fall asleep at night.

What about sleep makes us happy?

  • Better mood

  • Decreased risk of chronic illness

  • Confidence boost

  • Improved quality of life

Put the theory to the test! Add some new flowers and houseplants to your collection and see how you start to feel. Keep some fresh lavender sprigs nearby your sleep environment for relaxing aromatherapy effects before bedtime. I recommend also adding the Polar Point Cool Touch Memory Pillow to your sleep environment for the best sleep that will put you in the best possible mood to take on your day! This pillow has cooling qualities that will keep your body temperature regulated, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Sleep great tonight so you can go out and achieve your dreams tomorrow, but make sure to always make time to slow down, stop, and smell the roses.
